How To Make a Weather Safety Kit

By Rachelle Oblack, About.com

The biggest concerns with winter storms are losses of heat, power, telephone service, and a shortage of supplies. This is especially critical if snow storms and blizzard conditions continue for more than a day. So, to prevent disasters, gather the following supplies…

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 15 minutes

Here's How:

  1. A flashlight and extra batteries.

  2. A battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio and portable radio to receive emergency information.

  3. Extra food and water. High energy food, such as dried fruit or candy, and food requiring no cooking or refrigeration is best.

  4. Extra medicine and baby items. Don’t forget your pets!

  5. A first-aid survival kit.

  6. Heating fuel. Fuel carriers may not reach you for days before or after a severe winter storm.

  7. An emergency heating source, such as a fireplace, wood stove, or space heater. Be sure the source is properly vented.

  8. A fire extinguisher and smoke detector. Make sure the batteries are refreshed.
