Wind Sock

By Rachelle Oblack, About.com

Definition: A wind sock is a commonly used tool for determining wind direction. The instrument consists of a taped cone-shaped sleeve which catches the motion of air and pivots to indicate the direction of the wind. The cone shape allows the wind to enter in the large end and the tapered end will point away from the origin of the wind.
