Are Auroras a Weather Phenomenon?

NASA
Auroras cannot be classified as weather phenomena. Instead, auroras are a part of a class of science known as space weather.

Describing the boundary between weather studies and space weather studies is not always clear. Weather is the daily change of atmospheric events on Earth. The layers of the atmosphere of Earth do not have a clear-cut ending. In other words, the atmosphere fades into space as particle density gets lower and lower. In addition, space weather studies require an understanding of the particles and gases in the atmosphere. In fact, the gases in our atmosphere are what create the beautiful curtain of colors in the Northern and Southern Lights.

Aurora weather depends on several factors including solar radiation, the earth's magnetic shield, and earth's position in relationship to the sun.
