Definition: The atmosphere of earth acts as a blanket around our blanket. The radiation from the sun enters into the atmosphere and some of the gases will trap heat inside.

The main greenhouse gases are-

  1. Carbon Dioxide
  2. Ozone
  3. Methane
  4. Nitrous Oxide
Common Misspellings: Greenhouse Gasses
Examples: The name comes from the effects you would see in a real greenhouse. The sun gets trapped inside of the greenhouse by the glass. Keep in mind that just as plants would not be able to grow in the cold months without a real greenhouse, the earth would also not be able to sustain life without some greenhouse effect. An excellent example of a runaway greenhouse effect is on the planet Venus where temperatures are hot enough to melt lead!
