Advisory Forecasts

By Rachelle Oblack, About.com

Definition: Advisory forecasts are often given by a weather forecaster during your local news report. Mmeteorologists will often say “there is a ________ advisory in the area until 9:00 o’clock”. (Fill in the blank with a multitude of weather terms such as wind, snow, frost, heat, flash floods, UV, hurricane, tornado, and so on.) These advisories often mean a more severe weather could be heading into the viewing area.

An advisory is usually a first step in the alert protocols for a weather forecaster. Often, you will see the advisories posted in a sliding menu across the screen of your television as your watch local programming. These weather advisories are the earliest part of the severe storm warning system.

Also Known As: Weather advisories
Examples: As a weather system approaches which may (or may not) develop into a severe thunderstorm, many viewers will watch for advisories. These advisories can later be upgraded to watches and warnings.
