Tropical Storm Fay + An Overcrowded Bus in Haiti = Human Tragedy

Wednesday August 20, 2008
Tropical storm Fay may have a larger death toll than the 10 previously reported. As many as 50 passengers on a bus have not been found in Haiti according to Reuters. The overcrowded bus was swept off an engorged river crossing in the southwestern province of Grand-Anse. The victims of the storm may have been swept into a large ravine preventing rescue workers from reaching them.

Fay is an unorganized and messy storm lacking a well-defined hurricane eye, but she is still causing a lot of problems. The storm hit the Florida Keys, but the fear is that the storm will veer into the Gulf and then use the warm seawater to build strength. The maximum sustained winds are 45 mph, but the storm could become a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Residents from Flagler Beach, Florida to Altamaha, Georgia are under a hurricane watch. The National Hurricane Center predicts the storm will cling more to the Florida coast with a gradual turn towards the Northwest in the next day. 5 to 15 inches of rain are expected over portions of Florida with storm surges 1 to 3 feet above normal. In addition, hurricane-induced tornadoes are possible. UPDATE: Tropical Storm Fay is bouncing around the Gulf like a pinball. Florida and Georgia may be hit for the fourth time!
