Can a Hurricane Turn Into a Tornado?

My students and I are learning about weather. We came upon an interesting question. Do hurricanes turn into tornadoes? I assumed that they did, but wasn't really sure. So, I am asking for a little assistance. Doing a little research, both the students and I, we concluded that hurricanes do not turn into tornadoes, but they spawn them. The reading didn't go any further in suggesting how tornadoes are spawned by hurricanes. Thanks for your assistance.
