Definition:  A winter storm is an event during which winter precipitation (snow, sleet, or freezing rain) is expected to cause hazardous weather conditions. Winter storms can occur in the late autumn, winter, or early spring seasons.

Whenever the potential for heavy snow or significant ice accumulations exists, the National Weather Service will issue a Winter Storm Watch or a Winter Storm Warning.
