How To Make a Monthly Climate Data Calendar

By Rachelle Oblack, About.com

Using an online program, you can choose to create an average monthly weather calendar featuring temperatures, heating and cooling degree days, and average precipitation. The Midwestern Regional Climate Center offers the service for free! Anyone living in the weather station locations in the states below may find that knowing the averages for a location could help you to prepare for a hot summer or cold winter! Teachers can also use the calendars to create lessons on analyzing climate trends!

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Under 5 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Although it would be great to see this service offered for more states, currently, the service is only available to 9 Midwestern states.
    • Illinois
    • Kentucky
    • Missouri
    • Indiana
    • Michigan
    • Ohio
    • Iowa
    • Minnesota
    • Wisconsin

  2. Go to the Midwestern Climate Center Climate Calendar page by following the link.

  3. Click on the calendar image at the bottom of the page.

  4. Choose the state for your climate calendar.

  5. Choose the weather station data you would like to view.

  6. Choose the month for display on the calendar.

  7. You are done! You have now created a calendar which shows temperature and precipitation records from 1971-2000 and includes average daily temperatures and precipitation for the entire month!

Tips:

  1. To Print: Remember to check your printer setting to display the entire calendar.

  2. Teachers: Create a whole series of calendars for your students. Graph the information and look for trends.
