Hurricane Gustav made landfall on September 1, 2008 at around 10:30 a.m. about 60 miles Southwest of New Orleans, Louisiana. Satellite imagery of the storm did not show a clear and characteristic eyewall structure and poorly defined spiral bands of clouds. The National Hurricane Center indicated the storm is already downgraded to a Category 2 storm.

The mandatory evacuation of New Orleans ended Wednesday, September 3 at midnight. Mayor Nagin called residents to return home as the low pressure zone of Hurricane Gustav moved North towards Missouri bringing more rain to the South and Midwest. While the city would not be fully operational for several days, the tragedy of Gustav's predicted intensity were averted...But the 2008 hurricane season was not over.
