According to Cigar Afficianado Magazine the storm ripped roofs off homes and was blamed for the collapse of nearly 3,500 tobacco curing barns, or casas de tobaccos. The storm knocked power out in many parts of Cubas's capital, Havana. Toppled trees and power lines left homes underwater and washed away roads.
The open water in the Gulf of Mexico stood menacingly between Hurricane Gustav and the United States. Over 2 million people evacuated the region and President Bush preemptively declared Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama federal disaster zones.
The storm would later make landfall on September 1, 2008 hitting the United States about 60 miles Southwest of New Orleans, Louisiana.
