Hurricane Gustav Hits Haiti and the Dominican Republic

While only classified as a tropical storm by the time Gustav hit Haiti, the storm would later become a fierce Category 4 storm as it struck Cuba and headed for the United States.

NASA Earth Observatory
Gustav, the 7th named storm of the 2008 Hurricane Season in the Atlantic, hit Hispaniola (the island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti) on Tuesday, August 26, 2008. 81* deaths have been reported from the storm mostly due to mudslides, flash floods, and falling trees and debris (* to be updated as more reports come in).

The intense rains caused widespread flooding and the rain was expected to continue even as all eyes were on the next location on the Hurricane Gustav hit-list. The storm stalled just a bit when it hit the higher elevations of the island. The stalled hurricane increased precipitation amounts and caused rivers to flood their banks. The South East, West, Nippes, and Grand Anse regions were especially hard hit with the 60 mph winds.
