The TIROS program was the first advancement in space-based meteorology returning the first pictures of Earth's weather from above.

NOAA
From April 1, 1960 to July 2, 1965 ten TIROS satellites were launched. The TIROS program was followed by the TIROS Operational System (TOS) and the Improved TIROS program (ITOS). NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service in Maryland then took over with their two types of satellites.
  • Geostationary Satellites: Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) are designed for short-term forecasting or now-casting.
  • Polar-Orbiting Satellites: Polar-Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES) are designed for longer-range forecasting by monitoring the Earth in its entirety.
