Punching the Core

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Punching the core of a tornado or severe thunderstorm is a weather slang term made popular by the movie Twister. In the movie, Helen Hunt looks over at Bill Paxton saying “We’re in the core”. The core of a severe thunderstorm is the area where precipitation is heavy and hail is often present. Many amateur storm chasers find themselves in danger in a situation like this which is why punching the core is not a recommended practice. In addition to the dangers associated with hail, tornadoes can often be invisible from a ground perspective.
