You won't be trapped by severe weather thanks to a series of satellites in operation by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
According to a NOAA presentation, the COSPAS-SARSAT Satellite System is designed to "take the search out of search and rescue". Now, you can get your own Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) the next time you take a trip to a remote location. Boaters can also register a beacon capable of sending messages to satellites in case of a severe weather distress call.
SARSAT Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking
Originally developed by NASA, the SARSAT or Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking system was a joint effort between the United States, France, and Canada which was later turned over to NOAA for daily operation.
COSPAS Developed by the Soviet Union
COSPAS was a similar program developed by the Soviet Union. The two systems merged and in 1984, the COSPAS-SARSAT system was considered fully operational. Since that time, over 20,000 people have been rescued worldwide.
