Definition: Infrasonics is the study of low-frequency sound. Humans cannot hear sounds in very low ranges. Scientists believe that by listening to a storm they can develop advanced warning systems. Tornadoes, earthquakes, avalanches, and geomagnetic activity all have sound frequencies in the inaudible range for humans. For instance, there is some evidence that a tornado can be detected several minutes before it touches down leaving several precious minutes of time to warn citizens in an area.
