Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones (all the same thing) are given names to distinguish one storm from another. In the United States, you can find the
names of Atlantic tropical cyclones (aka hurricanes) from 2007 through 2012. While Atlantic hurricanes are named on a year over year basis, northern Indian Ocean cyclones are named in order regardless of the year. For instance, the last storm of 2007 was
Cyclone Sidr. The first storm of 2008 was
Cyclone Nargis. The names appear sequentially in the list below. The names are contributed by Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. and are maintained by the
India Meteorological Department.
