The April 2011 tornado outbreak will go down in history as a record-breaking month for tornadoes. The statistics are startling, and eerily similar to some of the worst storms in recorded history.

Each year, around 1000 tornadoes move through the US, but only about 2% of them reach either F4 or F5 status on the Fujita scale. Most tornadoes are not strong, occurring in rural areas and doing little to no damage. A Southern US nightmare occurred when a massive string of tornadoes struck at least 5 states leaving at least 45 people dead and more than 150 injured.

In January, while temperatures hit record highs across many parts of the United States, many residents did not expect a killer tornado and flooding to ravage the area. This has lead to a breeding ground for severe weather as tornado watches, floods, and severe thunderstorms are causing damages in many areas of the Midwest.
