Very high and very puffy clouds made entirely of ice often appear as ripples in the sky. The characteristic puffiness of cumulus clouds can be seen easily, but the individual clouds are very small. These clouds are not common. Although distinct in appearance, the clouds are often confused for altocumulus clouds. The way to tell the difference is to look for very small tufts rather than the larger tufts seen in altocumulus clouds. If you have ever seen a 'popcorn' ceiling, this is what the clouds appear as in the sky. The clouds indicate cold weather, but not necessarily any impending bad weather.
