Wind Barbs Indicate Wind Speed and Direction on Weather Station Models

NOAA National Weather Service
Definition: Wind barbs are the symbols used to represent wind speed on a weather diagram or chart. Like a feather, the barb is typically drawn on a wind direction shaft. The barbs com in two lengths each representing a different wind speed. A full barb represents a wind speed of 10 knots while a half barb represents a wind speed of 5 knots. The number of barbs are added together to get a full estimate of wind speed in a particular area. An example can be seen in the picture link.
