Wind speed is measured when the force of the winds causes the cups to rotate.

Definition: The name given for any instrument used to measure wind speed. The simplest form is a cup anemometer which rotates faster with increased wind speed. John T. R. Robinson is credited with the invention of the hemispherical cup anemometer in 1846.
