Today marks the official close of the 2012 Atlantic (and Pacific) hurricane season. Overall this season, 19 named storms occurred--10 of which became hurricanes and only 1 of those, a major hurricane.
2010, 2011, and 2012 each produced 19 named storms. This ties them for for the #3 most active Atlantic hurricane seasons since hurricane record-keeping begain in 1851. Only two seasons--2005 which produced 28 named storms, and 1933 which produced 20 named storms--have been busier.
