Floods and Disease Spread Death

Wednesday September 10, 2008
China: Two days of heavy rains have caused a massive mudslide killing at least 128 people when a mine reservoir collapsed. Reuters reports a barrage of medical officials disinfecting the Yunhe village in Xiangfen county which was partly destroyed by the mudslide. More bodies are expected to be found...more.

Africa: Heavy rains and floods across most of West Africa have killed at least 31 people while a cholera epidemic has killed 103 more people. Reuters reports several West African countries have been urged to form a plan for effective, lasting responses to what has turned into a 'recurring annual humanitarian crisis'..more.

India: Bihar residents, heavily impacted by the monsoon flooding, took to the streets to protest the government response to the flooding. Diarrhea, infections, and respiratory illnesses are now settling into many areas even as the flood waters recede. Conditions in the flood refugee camps are disgusting, at best. While more than 1000 people have died, many fear the slow government response will cause even more to die from disease...more.
