Hurricane Gustav - Hurricane Gustav Aims For New Orleans
As of today, Gustav is officially back at hurricane strength on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The 5 day outlook for the storm means New Orleans will get either a direct or indirect hit. The image to the left shows a cone of uncertainty that could vary based on other atmospheric conditions. Warm ocean temperatures and a low wind shear environment are making conditions ripe for a massive storm. There is some indication that wind shear is increasing, which could slow the development of Gustav. In addition, meteorologists are watching a high pressure zone over the United States which could alter the path of Gustav.More than 1,500 National Guard troops have gathered and Mayor Nagin has held press conferences to present the plans for safety in the city. While the levees in New Orleans have been rebuilt and more pump stations have been installed, many fear the preparations will not be enough to hold back the waters if Gustav reaches a higher-than-expected intensity. Currently, Gustav is expected to be a Category 3 storm.
