How Much Land Can a Lightning-Induced Fire Destroy?

Thursday June 12, 2008
Well, I truly do not know what the record is...(anyone have any ideas?) But the Evans Road Fire in eastern North Carolina’s Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge had grown to nearly 40,000 acres. While the fire is nearly 40% contained, it has caused massive damage. The fire was caused by lightning and dense smoke advisories have been issued. The summer season may prove dangerous for fire weather considering it is the worst wild fire in NC for the last 22 years.
  1. Go to the lightning image gallery.
  2. Go to the North Carolina Forest Resource Office for day-to-day updates on the fires.
  3. Go to the Wild Fires Today Blog for more information, maps, and photos.
  4. Learn more about the brave NC Firefighters working to contain the fires.
