Can Hurricanes Spawn Tornadoes?

Wednesday August 8, 2007
The short answer is YES! A great example is Hurricane Ivan. This hurricane was one of the costliest in US History, (although the damage does not come near Hurricane Katrina's devastation). A time series of Ivan pictures from September 9th through September 16th, 2004 are available for viewing. The images are courtesy of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Science Visualizations Studio. In addition, a great tornado video is available which catches a tornado being formed during Ivan. Finally, get a first-hand account of the terror of being caught in a tornado resulting from a hurricane in this great reader submitted story on Hurricane Ivan. With Atlantic waters ready and warm enough for hurricanes, be sure to also read the 9 steps to hurricane safety. It could save your life!
